How it works

Sermorelin is a synthetic peptide analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), often described as GRF 1-29 because it reproduces the biologically active first 29 amino acids of the full-length hormone.[1] It belongs to a drug class called growth hormone secretagogues: compounds that prompt the body's own pituitary gland to release growth hormone, rather than supplying growth hormone directly the way recombinant somatropin (HGH) does.

Sermorelin has a notable regulatory history. It was previously marketed in the United States as an FDA-approved prescription drug (brand name Geref) for evaluating and treating pediatric growth hormone deficiency, but that approved product was later discontinued and is no longer commercially available. Today, sermorelin circulates mainly as a compounded or research-labeled peptide sold outside the FDA-approved drug pathway, which is a meaningfully different regulatory situation than an active, approved medication.

Benefits & side effects

The strongest evidence for sermorelin comes from its historical, labeled use in pediatric growth hormone deficiency, where it was studied for stimulating or diagnosing deficient growth hormone secretion in children under specialist endocrine care.[3] Guidelines from pediatric endocrine societies continue to frame growth hormone axis treatment as a diagnosis-driven, specialist-managed decision, not a general wellness intervention.

Evidence is much weaker for the anti-aging, sleep, and body-composition claims that dominate online marketing. A systematic review of growth hormone therapy in healthy older adults found only small body-composition changes alongside increased adverse events, and did not establish any anti-aging benefit.[4] Because sermorelin acts on the same growth hormone axis, that same caution applies: a plausible mechanism does not equal a proven benefit in otherwise healthy adults.
