Adipotide Peptide Guide

Adipotide is an experimental research peptide also known as FTPP (fat-targeted proapoptotic peptide) or Prohibitin-TP01. It is described as a chimeric 25-amino-acid peptide combining a fat-targeting sequence, a cell-death-inducing motif, and a short linker. [1] Rather than acting through appetite hormones like most obesity drugs, it was engineered to home in on blood vessels supplying white adipose (fat) tissue. Its scientific record rests almost entirely on animal research and one small early-phase human trial, not on approved medical use. Deliberately damaging tissue vasculature to shrink the fat it supports is a fundamentally different, more invasive strategy than appetite- or hormone-based weight-loss compounds.

What It Is

How It Works

Adipotide combines a homing sequence that binds prohibitin, a protein on blood vessel cells feeding white fat, with a proapoptotic sequence that triggers programmed cell death once absorbed.[1] Because fat tissue depends heavily on its blood supply, damaging that vasculature is hypothesized to starve and shrink the fat it feeds.

In mouse studies, this strategy ablated white fat and reversed diet-induced obesity. That is a plausible mechanism in animals, not proof that deliberately injuring vasculature is safe or effective in people.

What the Research Shows

The strongest data come from a 2011 study in obese rhesus monkeys: daily subcutaneous Adipotide for 28 days reduced body weight, waist circumference, and imaged white fat, and improved insulin-resistance markers.[2] Earlier rodent work supported the same general concept and linked it to improved glucose tolerance.

Human evidence is limited to one registered Phase 1 trial (NCT01262664) in patients with advanced prostate cancer and obesity, designed to find a maximum tolerated dose rather than prove weight-loss benefit.[8] No published, controlled human efficacy trial exists. The gap between striking primate results and this narrow safety study is why Adipotide remains investigational rather than proven.

Safety & Side Effects

The primate study's main safety signal was dose-related change in the kidney's proximal tubules, described by researchers as predictable and reversible at doses tested.[2] Because the mechanism intentionally targets blood vessels, kidney and off-target vascular effects are central research concerns, not incidental findings.

  • Long-term or repeat-cycle kidney and vascular effects are unstudied in humans
  • Selectivity outside white fat tissue is not fully established
  • Safety in kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, or active cancer is unknown
  • Interactions with anticoagulants or glucose-lowering drugs are undefined

The Phase 1 trial probed tolerability and dose limits; it did not establish a safety profile suitable for general use.

Regulatory Status

Adipotide is not FDA-approved for obesity, diabetes, or any other condition. Its only U.S. regulatory footprint is an Investigational New Drug (IND) clearance that let the Phase 1 trial proceed after FDA safety review — a step permitting research to continue, not a finding that the drug is safe or effective.[11]

FDA-approved obesity medications such as tirzepatide and semaglutide carry full prescribing labels with defined indications and warnings; Adipotide has none. Any product sold online as research-grade Adipotide falls outside FDA compounding review and should not be assumed to match the peptide used in published studies.
